About Us
Hi, I'm Marlise! I was raised in beautiful Lumsden, and followed my heart west to Vancouver Island as a young adult. There I found myself, met my husband, and began my love affair with all things secondhand.
My first apartment was filled with garage sale pieces and free stuff set out on the curb. As I aged, so did my my tastes, and I moved from "good enough it's free" to hunting and searching for the perfect item, at the right price. With my first house came a massive renovation, and I discovered the joy that is Habitat for Humanity Restores. I LOVED finding things we needed, at prices we could afford, all while keeping materials out of the landfill.
The next step in my journey was sustainably supporting my kids. Turns out all they really wanted was me, and definitely not something new, shiny, expensive, and wasteful (fast forward a few years and now that IS what they really want... we're working on it). I was floored at the cost of children's items, things they'd only use for a few months! Outgrow after one wear! I quickly fell into a secondhand lifestyle. Purchasing kids items used, and as soon as my babies grew out of something, sell it to the next family! We lived in a very small home, so space was at a premium, and I couldn't justify holding on to things when I knew it could be (sustainably) replaced later down the road if need be.
When school loomed for my eldest, I knew it was time to go back home. Back to my roots, back to the prairies. So we packed a Uhaul, and I dragged my poor born and bred Victorian husband to the Land of Living Skies. We love it here in the RM, except maybe February. It may be the shortest month, but it sure doesn't feel like it when -40 stretches on and on in the darkness.
A few years go by and we settle into prairie life. 2020 hits. The world shuts down. 2021, we regain some sense of normalcy, but life seems a little like walking on eggshells. Bring on 2022, and families can't afford to make ends meet. Interest rates soar, groceries cost more than ever before, and no one can afford to fill their gas tanks. From these expensive times, the idea of Legacy Consignment was born. Secondhand kids clothes IS somewhere that families can save money right now. Save the trip to Regina, stay local, and support local families, all while saving yourself a buck or two.
